Motorola have always been at the forefront of enterprise mobility solutions by providing a comprehensive range of mobile computers that are designed to provide ruggedness and reliability for industrial applications. The products provided by Motorola have always been design with the needs of business users in mind making them ideal for a broad spectrum of industry, including security, health and homecare, facilities management, courier companies and local government.

One of the most successful product ranges within Motorola’s market-leading field mobility WAN portfolio has been the MCxx series starting with the MC70 in 2006, which at the time was the industry’s first size-optimized rugged EDA (Enterprise Digital Assistant) for inside and outside the four walls applications. The portfolio has been expanded and become more diverse with the introduction of the MC65 and its predecessor the MC55 offering the same rugged and ergonomic design of the MC7x range but it a smaller and sleek design.

The latest devices within this family the MC75A, MC67 and MC45 are the leading devices for in field mobile applications. They all offer the latest in advance data capture such as RFID, Barcode reading (Imager and Laser Scanning), Colour Camera (3.2MP) along with the latest in wireless communication such as HSDPA, or WLAN (802.11 a/b/g/n) or Assisted GPS.

The groups of devices are all backwards compatible and share accessories, for example the MC70 was replaced by the MC75 which has now been replaced by the MC75A all of which share the same accessories such as batteries, chargers, cradles etc.

The portfolio is completed by the addition of the ES400 which was introduced to bridge the gap between the industrial and commercial devices by providing a smaller rugged and robust device. The target users for the ES400 are suited for business users who need to adhere to corporate policy, use barcode scanners and software applications written specifically for Windows Mobile.

The introduction of the CS40 from Intermec prompted a challenge in this newly forged area for the industrial manufacturers. Once the initial positioning of the CS40 and pricing had been resolved it became a serious competitor to the ES400 with its dedicated barcode scanner and more rugged design. However, with the introduction of the MC45, Motorola have added weight in this area combining the latest technology with an industrial rugged design but with the size similar to the ES400 providing the next generation of rugged mobile computer for this new area of mobile user.

All the devices in the portfolio are supported by Motorola’s Comprehensive Coverage which covers normal wear and tear as well as internal and external components damaged through accidental damage.

The latest releases from Motorola the MC45 and the MC67 will add new and improved functionality to the range as well as providing clear migration paths for existing users. The MC family will continue to keep Motorola at the leading edge of rugged mobile computing for years to come and would be a wise investment for any organisation considering devices for mobile working.
